Frequently Asked Questions

What is DSL?
DSL stands for Digital Subscriber Line. DSL uses your regular phone line to connect to the Internet at greater speeds than standard dialup. DSL uses frequencies that are beyond the range of human hearing, you can use your phone to make calls at any time without disturbing the DSL signal.

I see DSL and aDSL; what is the difference?
DSL comes in several varieties, such as SDSL and ADSL, with ADSL being the most common. The 'a' in aDSL stands for asymmetrical, which means that the connection downloads data faster than it uploads data. Usually, 'DSL' without a letter in front means that the company sells ADSL.

What is the difference between DSL and Broadband?
Broadband is a term that describes a family of high-speed connections such as DSL, Cable and Frame relay. Technically, broadband describes any single transmission media that can transmit more than one signal at once. For example, DSL can transmit voice and data at the same time, and cable can carry a TV signal and an internet signal at the same time.

What is the difference between cable modems and DSL?
The major difference is that DSL uses your phone lines and cable modems use your cable television lines. The disadvantage of cable modems is that they share a bandwidth pool, meaning that a certain amount of bandwidth is allotted to each segment on the network. Usually, a network segment is the same people in your neighbourhood where you live or work. If another user on the same segment is using a lot of bandwidth, you may not get your full share of bandwidth that you are paying for. NetworxHosting.com DSL guarantees the same amount of bandwidth to every user.

My phone company also sells DSL. Why should I go with NetworxHosting.com?
Phone companies do a great job in selling voice service. However, their networks are built for voice transmission, not data transmission. Our network was built for data, so it works more efficiently. Also, when you call our technical support team, you'll speak with someone whose only job is Internet technical support, with minimal on-hold times. Our experienced installation staff, first class network and vast coverage areas are other reasons why NetworxHosting.com is the best choice for your DSL provider.

My neighbour has DSL, but you say I can't get it. Why?
DSL has a distance limitation of 15,000 line feet. That distance is measured from the phone company's central office (CO) to your demarcation point. It could be that your neighbour is almost at the 15,000-foot mark and you are just beyond it. There is also the possibility that your home is serviced by aluminum wires or fiber optics, or that you may have experienced poor sound quality in the past and the phone company installed load coils to fix the problem. All these and other concerns could affect your ability to receive DSL service.

How will DSL affect my current phone service?
NetworxHosting.com DSL service will not incur you any additional charges with your local telephone company. DSL should not affect the sound quality on your phone line. However, some people are able to hear higher frequency sounds than normal, and may be able to hear part of the DSL carrier noise. If you can hear part of the signal, we suggest that you install filters on your phones, and on all devices that use modems, such as alarm systems and fax machines. Noise filters can also be purchased from Radio Shack, Futureshop, Bestbuy and some other hardware stores.

Are static IP addresses available?
All of our DSL business services come with static IP addresses. For residential customers, they are available for an additional monthly charge.

What would I need a static IP address for?
A static IP address is used for various specialized needs, including certain kinds of online banking software, VPN (Virtual Private Network), telecommuting, telnet, FTP, and some travel reservation software. Most users do not need static IPs.

Can I host any services over my DSL connection?
You can run VPN, Telnet, E-Mail Server SMTP or POP3, DNS, FTP or any other Internet addressable traffic that can be carried over TCP/IP.

Can't I host a website over my DSL connection?
If you have a static IP, you can host a website from your home computer, but we don't recommend or support it. Ideally, a web-server should be a dedicated machine with multiple internet connections. With the average home machine which is used for many purposes and has only one DSL connection, you risk having your content be inaccessible. It will likely be more cost effective and reliable for you to use our web hosting services.
